Personal Mastery Coaching
Personal mastery (as defined by Peter Senge) is a journey in which people continue to expand their ability to create the results in life that they truly seek so that they can live life from a creative, as opposed to reactive, viewpoint. Personal mastery is not about learning new things in order to expand your horizons; it is about living intentionally and transforming along the way.
What is the Personal Mastery program?
Personal Mastery program is an invitation to share, explore and transform your stories in a safe environment. Ultimately, it is an invitation to craft your own authentic story framework and take full responsibility for its unfolding.
The program uses storytelling as a way to raise client’s awareness and facilitate their transformation. Stories are used because we are all storytellers; we create meaning through stories and we communicate through stories. Stories that we tell ourselves give us implicit possibilities and limits; they either empower or disempower us. Therefore, it is important to always be aware of the stories that we are telling ourselves, of the stories that we live in. It is also important to learn how to shift from disempowering stories to more empowering stories.
To initiate transformational changes, the program fosters expression of a full range of emotions (see the Resources section). Therefore, through the program you will build emotional literacy and work on your emotional fluency (which will assist you with EI competencies).
The program includes teaching and coaching components. Teaching is done to introduce new terminology and concepts in order to ensure your readiness for coaching.
Personal Mastery program is based on the Narrative Coaching training by Dr. David Drake and Great Story Coaching training by Lucid Living.
Is this Program for you?
The program is for you if you want to better understand who you are, clarify what really matters to you and create a framework that will keep you grounded no matter what your circumstances are.
It is for you if you:
- Understand and accept that you create your own reality (no excuses and no blaming)
- Are genuinely interested in being fully responsible for your life
- Are invested in creating a positive future for yourself no matter what the circumstances are
- Are committed to finding and living your own authentic story
- Are willing to be honest with yourself and use the power of emotions to facilitate change
This program will challenge your old beliefs. You may encounter concepts that are foreign to your way of thinking and seeing life. It will challenge you both intellectually and emotionally. Therefore, if you are taking this program, it is important to be open minded and committed to change.
If your life was a story and you were the author of that story, how would you want your story to unfold?
In this program, we will be exploring three types of stories in terms of their function: Victim, Overcoming and Authentic story.
Sometimes we refer to the Victim story as your small story and to the Overcoming story as your big story. Everybody has their small story (or stories) and everybody has their big story (or stories). Our small stories are about things that happened to us, things that were not fair and that went wrong. These are the stories that make us feel powerless. Our big stories are about things that we managed to overcome, about changes that we made, about our struggles and hard-won achievements. For a lot of people, their life’s purpose is to go from a small story to a big story. However, very often when we find ourselves in our big story we do not necessarily feel content and/or happy. This is because there is always another challenge to overcome and another battle to fight. Overcoming stories usually turn into never-ending stories that make us feel as if we are on a treadmill.
Authentic story is a framework that we use to create our own unique, empowering and fulfilling stories. Authentic stories are driven by what we deeply care about and what we want to create in our life. It is important to note that even with our Authentic story framework in place, we will not stop venturing into the victim or overcoming territory. However, we will always be able to find our way back home.
You will leave the program with several tangible artifacts. You will identify an event during your adolescent years that did set in place your limiting beliefs and kept you trapped in your Victim story. Based on your Victim story, you will identify what you are passionate about (Passion statement) and based on your Overcoming story, you will develop your Triumph statement as a way to transcend your life-long struggles. In addition, you will rediscover your talents and gifts and craft your Grace statement. Finally, you will develop your personal Vision. All of these things together are what your Authentic story framework will be based on (see the Resources section).
How is personal mastery related to leadership?
People cannot lead authentically unless they understand themselves and make personal mastery their lifelong undertaking.
As I was looking for ways to reconnect with myself (see the About Me section), I came across the Great Story Coaching program by Lucid Living. This program is full of wonderful concepts and strategies that I have incorporated into my own Personal Mastery program. I’m confident that the Personal Mastery program will enable you to create the results in life that you seek so that you can lead authentically.
How is the program designed?
The Personal Mastery program follows a 12-step approach designed by Lucid Living.
Steps 1‐4 will take you into the past to learn about the terrain of limitations. You will develop your “Emotional Timeline,” and you will uncover your Wounding event to understand the limiting beliefs that keep your Victim story in place.
Steps 5‐8 are in place to help you discover the content you will need to craft your Authentic story framework. Your Victim story will lead you to your Passion statement and your Overcoming story will lead you to your Triumph statement. You will also rediscover your unique grace.
Steps 9‐12 are creative steps. We will follow them to help you design your Vision, discover what motivates you and draft your Authentic story framework. These steps will also help you understand how to implement your unfolding Authentic story with day‐to‐day choices and habits.
The program can take anywhere from 12 weeks to 12 months depending on how much time you need. Even though the program’s steps seem to be linear, we will leverage them based on your readiness and your comfort level.
